Atang Tshikare, a multitalented, multifaceted, and self-taught, local artist with 20 years of creative expression behind him was largely influenced by the visual storytelling and graphic style of his father’s anti-Apartheid illustrations for various pan-African publications and art magazines. Atang has evolved from street art and drawings to limited-edition collectables and more recently leaning towards fine art sculpture, over the last 20 years.
Atang’s voice resonates with a visionary African identity while embracing a global contemporary art language. Atang has delved into several incredible collaborations with local artists and worked on commissions including Chimurenga Magazine, Adidas Originals, BMW, MTV Base, Belvedere Vodka, and Nando’s, to name but a few.
Currently working on a 2021 show dedicated to his firstborn Peo, Atang derived his ideas from the dynamic negotiations between urban dialogue emerging in contemporary art and design consciousness throughout Africa along with his personal heritage and South African cultural knowledge.
