Colijn Strydom

Colijn Strydom, born in Pretoria, now lives and works in the mother city. Colijn received his BA in Fine Art from the University of Pretoria and afterward obtained his Masters in Visual Arts from Stellenbosch University.

Although his main joy comes from drawing, his abilities spread far and wide including painting, photography, and even performance. Not only does he create but he has also lectured at Stellenbosch University, UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art, and the Ruth Prowse School of Art.

Colijn’s subject matter is quite diversified as he creates in order to discover – and questions rather than answers. Colijn engages deeply with ideas of gender and the Afrikaaner identity through his art while incorporating humour and other self-reflexive strategies. His main influences have been Mesopotamian art, Goya, and Reader’s Digest Magazine.

Colijn has exhibited work throughout South Africa including at 99 Loop, the AVA Gallery, and the Investec Cape Town Art Fair in Cape Town, Centenary Gallery at the University of the Free State, David Russ Gallery, and even as far as The Affordable Art Fair in Belgium with the Dyman Gallery.
