FORMS Gallery

FORMS, the gallery without a space located in South Africa and on the internet. FORMS’s objective is to change the way audiences relate to, access, and collect art, blending digital-first experiences with personalised real-life encounters with art. The gallery’s programme bridges local and international themes and scenes, taking shape through a combination of online and in-real-life (IRL) manifestations. At the heart of this programme are ongoing collaborations with artists who make work that is critically, aesthetically and politically important. Also central to the FORMS ecosystem are connections with like-minded spaces, people and organisations. The gallery was started in 2021 by curator Anthea Buys.

Curator, writer, and researcher Anthea Buys is based in Johannesburg, SA. In 2021, Anthea completed a Ph.D. in art history, specialising in critical theory and aesthetics from the University of the Witwatersrand. Anthea’s skills are far and wide apart having curated exhibitions at institutions including Hordaland Kunstsenter (where she worked as director, 2014-2017), Tallinn Art Hall, Palais de Tokyo, WIELS project space, and the Iziko South African National Gallery. She has also published essays on art and literature in a variety of academic journals, essay collections, monographs, and in the media.
