Michelle Van Reenen

Cape Town artist, Michelle van Reenen obtained a BA degree in Visual Arts (Graphic Design) from the University of Stellenbosch. She was the Co-Creative Director for design company, Room 13 Design, for 15 years and now manages its affiliated company, Room 13 Collection. She has, however, recently returned to her first love: art.

Abstract shapes and lines seemingly hover over the surface of Michelle’s expressionistic works on paper. Her sensitive practice delves into the complex relationship between conscious and unconscious selves. Ultimately, she makes space for harmonious existence between the two. Alcohol inks and watercolour are dripped or brushed onto paper. Lines are etched in ink, markers, or even bleach to create forms reminiscent of entoptic phenomena, sea creatures, maps, lights, cells, waves… all breathing, all shifting.
