Jacques Viljoen was in the midst of studying at The Florence Academy of Art when the Covid-19 Pandemic first reached Europe. After six months of isolation, he decided to come back to South Africa to be with family instead of returning to London where he had lived for the past 10 years. Armed with little more than his art materials and experience, he set about exploring the Western Cape. As if seeing it for the first time, Jacques painted “en plein air” from life, in oil. The rapidly shifting light of the great outdoors means that all paintings need to be completed in two or three hours and locations such as the top of Matroosberg do not allow one to return for a second session. Through the fresh eyes of a classically trained artist, this exhibition shows his exploration and appreciation for Cape Town and the surrounding country.
Jacques is a Cape Town-based painter who works exclusively painting from life. He completed a BA in Fine Art at The University of Cape Town in 2011, before moving to The UK where he exhibited at The Royal Society of Portrait Painters among other group shows. In 2018, he began studying academic drawing and painting at The Florence Academy of Art and lived in Florence until 2020, before returning to Cape Town.
We are thrilled to be hosting his exhibition titled ‘The Light And Weight of Home’ from the 2nd – 23rd of September.
