From the 4th to the 18th of March, 2021, we hosted Nanna Venter’s exhibition, “Monsters at the Cape of Good Hope”, in our Artist Admin exhibition space. Dr. Anja Venter is a postdoctoral fellow at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This was her first solo exhibition with the body of work created as an output for her tenure in the Applied Design department at CPUT.
In the exhibition, Nanna invoked ancient Southern African monsters, from mythology to zoology, and placed them centre stage in colonial-era artworks from Cape Town. The work explored invasion, ownership, displacement, the destructive forces of “progress”, and the monstrosity of our imperial past. It’s was a thrilling, educational and artistic exploration of the historical, African monster.
We assisted with the production of the exhibition as well as guidance with hanging the show.
